Having worked with professional footballers, champion boxers and a range of elite athletes at G42 Studios, I understand that sports performance training is not the same as general fitness. Your programme must be built around the specific physical demands of your sport.
The Key Physical Qualities for Sport
- Power - the ability to produce force quickly (sprinting, jumping, striking)
- Speed & agility - direction change, acceleration, reaction time
- Strength - the foundation of all physical qualities
- Endurance - sport-specific energy system conditioning
- Injury resilience - bulletproofing the joints and connective tissue
For Footballers
Football demands explosive speed over short distances, repeated sprint ability, powerful direction changes and the capacity to sustain high intensity for 90 minutes. I programme bilateral and unilateral leg power work (box jumps, trap bar deadlifts, single-leg exercises), speed drills and football-specific repeated sprint protocols.
For Boxers and Martial Artists
Boxers need rotational power, cardiovascular conditioning, fast-twitch muscle fibre development and the ability to generate force from unstable positions. I use medicine ball throws, plyometric push-ups, Olympic lift variations and boxing-specific metabolic conditioning circuits.
